It's December, again. That means... READATHON!

It's that time of the year again, folks! I go back to December all the time... Or at least once a year. And December means the second annual READATHON! Hosted by the wonderful WhoRuBlog, December 2-4 is spent reading and giving. For even more information, please visit this link here.

Just like last year I could not say no when asked to host a mini challenge at Courtney Reads. I am very lucky to be on the long list of awesome giveaways.

This year my challenge is...

What is your favorite holiday dish or dessert?

You may simply just state the dish in a comment below. But if you want to give the details on how to make this fabulous creation, I'm not going to stop you! I may have to try them for myself!

I absolutely adore baking and this time of the year I spend most of my time in the kitchen. I have been craving something peanut butter for a while now and searched everywhere for a peanut butter pie recipe. Last week, I made some and fell in love. I think I actually ate 3 peices yesterday... Oops. :)

Recipe:

-1 cup powdered sugar

-1 (8-ounce) block cream cheese, softened

-1 cup creamy peanut butter (I used Skippy - Creamy)
-1 (14-ounce) can fat-free sweetened condensed milk
-1 12-ounce tub frozen whipped topping, thawed
-2 9-inch graham cracker shells
-chocolate sundae syrup

Prep:
Combine the first 3 ingredients in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until smooth. Add the condensed milk, and beat until combined. Stir in the whipped topping. Divide the mixture evenly between shells; chill 8 hours or until set (pies will have a soft, fluffy texture). Cut into wedges, and drizzle with chocolate syrup.

Interview with the lovely Lauren Hammond

1. What is one word that would describe your writing style?

Ohhhh my. This is a tough one! I'd have to say eccentric. It's definitely different. Believe it or not, it took me eight years to find my voice. No looking back now!

2. Out of all of your written creations, which one would you be most excited to see on the big screen?
Ohhhh wow. I'd have to say it would be a toss-up between A Whisper To A Scream and Asphodel. A Whisper To A Scream because I think it would be interesting to see who they'd cast to play Adam. He is pretty devilish after all. And Asphodel because well, I'm Greek Myth junkie! Love it!

3. Would you rather publish your diary or make a movie on your most embarrassing moment?
Publish my diary. Without question.

4. You are asked to star in the show of your choosing (canceled or still on the air), what show would you be in?
The Vampire Diaries. I swear, that show is addictive and it gets better every season!

5. Halloween is my favorite time of the year. I love creative costumes! If you could dress up as anyone or anything, who/what would you be?
Halloween is absolutely my favorite time of year too! I will say that this year I'm going as Marilyn Monroe, but if I could be anyone or anything I'd be Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. Why? Because she's a lil on the looney side like me and because Harry Potter happens to be one of the best series of all time and she's my favorite character.

My Review

Lately, I have been in a book rut. All I wanted to read was a quick love story, but I had none in my library and no money in my wallet. Seriously, that thing laughed when I opened it. But thanks to my good friend, Lauren Hammond, my appetite was satisfied.

I will forever raise praises for Lauren’s writing. It’s brilliant. And her novella He Loves Me… He Loves You Not… was no exception. If you want to just sit down for a couple hours with a steamy read, listen up! You will fall quickly in love with Henry and wish you were Riley. Those two together… turn up the AC!

Riley is in love and having an affair with school hottie, Henry. Henry also loves Riley, but won’t break up with his long time girlfriend, Callie. It’s one big mess for Riley and she is breaking apart. All she wants to do is scream and shout at Henry that she is absolutely in love with him. But she lets it eat at her; lets him call the shots. She keeps it all a secret, even from her best friend. I got a bit perturbed with Riley at some points. She let a boy get the best of her, but I thought it over and realized that this is what happens. This is the other woman’s side. She truly loves Henry, more than anything. I can relate. If this was me and my boyfriend, I would act the same exact way.

Now, Henry. Oh my my my. He will forever be a favorite of mine. In the beginning you see him as a jerk that has to be using this poor girl and playing with her emotions. As you read, you learn things about him and you open your heart. It makes you want a risky, forbidden romance. It’s hot.

HLMHLYN is a quick, easy read. Grab a glass of sweet tea, curl up in your favorite chair, and shush anyone that comes near. You’ll be very happy.

This novella is pretty steamy, so I will give a rating of PG-13. Mature audience. Use your own judgment. I love HLMHLYN. I love Lauren Hammond. Check out everything she ever touches!

My Review
I am a very big fan of this author. All her other stories have captivated me to no end. I knew this would be no different. Jennifer Laurens is a magical being from a magical story telling land, I am sure of it. The only reason it took me so long to get it was because I never wanted to spend the ridic shipping charges! I should have just dealt with it and then it could have been all mine faster!

If you like somewhat darker tales, this is right up your alley. Just the way it is told, it seems so dark and intimate. It's almost like it is you and you hold all the secrets, but you are learning them all for the first time.
Please note that the idea is mature. Don't let that throw you, though. It is pulled off in a very tasteful way.
You know exactly what Eden's main goal is from the beginning, but you don't always know what she wants. She is a very unique girl. At some points I found myself wanting to slap her and say "Wake up! Realize you are in way over your head." Since I can't do that, though, she is always getting into something. Which I do have to say, makes for a very fun and eventful read.
You have a wide variety of characters that all have their own idea about how you should be enjoying life. That is one thing I always look forward to in Jennifer's novels. You never have the same character twice in within the read.
The writing has formal moments, but otherwise you can definitely relate to the speaker. I could see myself doing or saying things that go on. Maybe not hit on my teacher, but you know what I mean.
As you read, you flow right with the words and you believe everything that is said. I find that a major factor while reading. If I can hook onto the storyline and it allows me to think it is my own thoughts, that is a good read.
This is the type of book perfect for a fall day, maybe add in some rain and a mug of hot coco. Just hide away, curled up in a blanket, and dive in.
But don't read too fast! The end will show up out of no where and you will be left wanting a heck of a lot more!

I'm alive!!! Yes I am! No need to call in a missing persons report. I've just been so busy.

Like, a boyfriend, and I turned 18, and college! It's all happening for me... Kind of. Well, it's starting.

Also, I have been on nonstop Buffy The Vampire Slayer watch. Right now I'm season 5 episode 1. Needless to say, I'M ADDICTED!

I have stayed on my reading schedule, as in if I have a book in my vicinity, I'm reading it. And I really miss blogging, a lot. I want to come back, slowly. I will try and find time to get back on twitter and get back to writing reviews and staying on book watch. But I will need help! Please... :)

Right now I am reading Famished by Lauren Hammond. I love it and can't wait to review it for all of you.

My Review

***If you have not read The Ghost and The Goth, do not read this review. SPOILER ALERT!***

I said this about The Ghost and The Goth and I will say it about it's sequel: This is the most cliched sounding book, EVER, but don't let that fool you! This series kicks serious ghost booty.
Back in the lives of Alona Dare and Will Killian, former Queen Bee turned Queen of the Dead and the school's biggest outcast, there is always something happening.
We left them in TGaTG not sure what was coming next, and when we jumped into the story again, it was full speed ahead. Alona and Will are still trying to calm the ghosties and they are also still trying to calm their hormones. Yes, ghosts have hormones.
I am pro-Wilona! And, of course, there is always someone or something there trying to tear the good things apart. Her name is Mina and she is also a seer. So, you know Will had to jump on that and see what he could learn about it all. Maybe get a better understanding for the gift, maybe learn about his father. He gets some of that and just a little bit more.
I wasn't expecting what I got in this story. I never do with Stacey Kade. I always get so much more!
Some of our favorite ghosties are back and you get to read about their lives. You learn more about Lily, which I felt bittersweet toward at first. But I grew to love that aspect.
One thing that I was really happy about, Alona grows up a little bit! I mean, yeah, it took a big chuck of the book for the transformation to happen. There was quite a few times I was yelling at her for being such a princess, but that is why we all love her. She goes through a lot in QoTD. I felt bad for her! I couldn't stand to see my mother throwing away all my favorite things. And her father is moving on, fast, with his life and new family. That could kill a person, dead or not.
And Will was his same charming self. I enjoy reading from his POV. He is a very unique character. He did grate on my nerves a bit with Mina, but in the end I was okay with that.

Yet again, we are left with a cliffhanger. Stacey Kane knows exactly how to hook, reel us in, and keep us here forever. I will always be a fan.

Recommended for: Whoever has read The Ghost and The Goth.

My Review

Lauren Strasnick’s writing is very different. You can guarantee a twisted story when you pick up something with her name attached. But I’m not saying that in a bad way. Trust me.
    I kind of fell in love with her writing style with Her and Me and You. When I read that, I wasn’t sure what to think… But I let it fester within me, thought it over a few times, and realized I loved the uniqueness. After that, I knew I would have to read Nothing Like You. I didn’t seek out NLY. I promised myself that if I just happened to find it one day, I would buy it. Finally, I found it hidden at B&N. A few hours after I began reading, I had devoured the entire story.
    NLY had the same vibe as HaMaY. It deals with the same things. Love, loss, hurt, friendship, awkward friend-love-triangles. I will put it out there that both books are not for everyone. They deal with mature themes.
    One thing that I enjoy more than anything, is the characters seem real. These are real emotions that people go through. It’s not sugar coated. Lauren just lays it all out. And because of this, the characters are extremely relatable. I’m not saying that I go out drinking and have sex, but a lot of people do. Not judging, to each their own, and whatnot.
    You just want to go into the book and hug the MC, Holly. All you want is the best for her, no matter what. But she has to learn somehow, and as she learns, you do to.
    Holly has a best friend named Nils. The best parts were of them two together. I loved the chemistry and everything seemed perfect between them. The ideal besties. They even have a hang out. The Shack. I am quite jealous of this. I asked my dad if I could take over the back shed, but he said no… At least I tried.
    Paul grated my nerves. At one moment he is a giant jacka**. The next, he is a lost little puppy. I wanted to throw him into one of the fires... Saskia was a total sweetheart and I felt bad for her. There was a lot of hinting at her brother, but never any depth about him. I would have enjoyed a little more with his character.
    My only problem is the ending. It happened so abruptly! I wanted so much more from it! But I guess that is just the style of Lauren Strasnick. The story is quick and dark. Yes, I said dark, but don’t let that throw you. Like I said, it deals with mature themes, yet it’s the perfect book to take outside/to the beach/vacation and just lounge out and read.
    Try it, you might like it.

My Review

I wanted to love this novel terribly bad. I hyped it up in my head too much, I believe. Because, once I actually read it, I did not like it.
Hickey of the Beast is written as a letter to a friend from Connie's POV. That was one thing that made me want to read it. Experience a different format. But it felt like it took away from the story. There was too much slang. No, I don't mean "Yo, what up my homes?" type of slang. It was too friendly, and made me feel like I was missing too much.
Imagine reading a letter to someone you know nothing about. You are going to be confused on some level. The way the letter is talking to him/her is the way the real life friend would talk. That means a level of understanding you might not see.
Another thing that made me turn away is it was so slow in the beginning. I was having to pull myself through page after page with hope that things would speed up. At one point, it did, but not the way I wanted it to. All of a sudden, you went from point A to point D, totally skipping B and C.
And Connie. She was too... Empty, I guess. I'm not too sure how to describe her. I didn't connect to her at all.
After a few chapters, I lost interest. Nothing kept me going and I failed.

The one thing I do love is how this will be published. Hickey of the Beast is what you call a "serial novel". This means the book is being released in weekly chapters that you will receive when you pay for a subscription.
You have 2 options.
Option 1: Buy the eBook for one price and have to entire book on your eReader at once.
Option 2: Wait every week for a new chapter.

Honestly, I would buy the subscription. I think if you do that, you might enjoy it more. Because it's not all just sitting there. You have just a few pages every week. Almost like a TV show.
I am actually going to do that. Read a chapter a week. Maybe I will have a new and improved opinion on it.

I am not saying I hate this book nor that I don't think you should read it. I actually WANT you to read it. Give it a chance. I know I will give it one more shot, soon.

My Review

I was intrigued by the storyline, it’s one that means a lot to me. Not too many people are willing to touch the topic of suicide, but when they do, it’s an experience.
You read from the POV of Owen. Teen boy who isn’t happy with his lot in life. Attempts at suicide: 6. At first, he is only talking to one other suicidal teen. She then introduces him to 2 more. Together they talk about how they feel and what they want. They become the Suicide Dogs.
After so long of just talking over the internet, they decide to finally meet and take a road trip to visit the sites of celebrity suicides. They make a pact to all off themselves at the end of the trip - Death Valley.
Over the course of this trip, they all learn more about themselves. About why they really want to leave everything behind. The truth always comes out at some point.
Again, I love this storyline. Everything lays out perfectly. Nothing was unraveled too early or too late. It flowed just right.
And the character development is really good. From the beginning to end, there is so much change. You are constantly learning something new. But…the connection between the reader and the MC (Owen) was lacking quite a bit. It was almost as if a wall was blocking the two. I would have preferred this book either third person POV or just written better.
Now, the writing. It was funny and heartbreaking. Albert Borris has great talent. This brings us back to the connection.. It just wasn’t enough! I felt there was a lot more to Owen than was written.
The other characters spoke in their own voice. All of them together, you are guaranteed to either laugh or tear up.
I want to talk about my favorite. Audrey. I loved her. She has this “I-Don’t-Care” attitude. But the truth is so much greater with her. It would be great to get to read a little through her eyes. She starts out wound up like a tight ball. No one can get to her, except for one person. Owen, who becomes her boyfriend for the trip.

This is a great story I feel everyone should give a chance. If you do pick this book up, please go into it with an open mind. Even if you don’t normally go for this genre, just try it. You can catch a glimpse at how other people feel. Learn a little bit. Expand your horizons.
People deal with these emotions everyday. Don’t be narrow minded.

If you could be a normal human boy instead of the magical being you are, would you take the chance?

Pietr:
I do not think of myself as magical; we are very much the result of scientific tampering. And da, most days I think that if I had the opportunity to be normal I would probably take it. You have no idea how good you have it as a normal human being.

Courtney:
Was it love at first sight for you when you saw Jess?

Pietr:
Nyet. I do not believe in love at first sight. Lust at first sight or attraction at first sightóboth are possible. But love... True love deserves much more than one quick look can offer.

Courtney:
What in your past would you change if you could?

Pietr:
If I could change anything in my past I would change the night my parents disappeared. If I had been older or better prepared perhaps they would still be here.

Author Interview: Kimberly Derting

Welcome to Courtney Reads! Today, we have an awesome interview with author Kimberly Derting!

For those who have been living under a rock, Desires of the Dead (sequel to The Body Finder) hits bookstores in just a few days!

The Body Finder is one of my favorite novels and I could not wait for DotD. I will always speak high praises for this series and Kimberly Derting!

Okay. Onward to the good stuff!

1) Has anything you've written happened in real life?
Nothing like finding dead bodies or anything! But in Desires of the Dead, I did include a funny side-story for two of the secondary characters which was loosely based on something that happened to my daughter’s boyfriend. He knows nothing about this so it’ll be fun when he reads it. Either that, or he’ll never speak to me again. I guess I’ll know on February 15th!

2) What does your family think of your writing?
They’re super supportive. My husband helps out with housework and my kids (almost) never complain about eating fast food…again!

3) If you could have dinner with any 3 book characters from any story, who would they be? Why?
Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, Isabella Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments series, and Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, because they’re all kick-ass, tough girls.

4) What or who is your biggest muse?
Hmm…my husband would probably like me to say him (HA!), but I’m gonna have to go with Evanescence since they’re music sets the perfect haunting backdrop for The Body Finder books.

My Review

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I began The Ghost and The Goth. The synopsis tells us we are going to read in two point of views. POV 1: Alona Dare; once popular, now dead. POV 2: Will Killian; gifted outcast. Neither cares for the other, but, due to circumstances, they must find common ground.
The big question I know we all want to know before diving into this book is, will there be a romance? The synopsis' we read does give a little minuscule nudge, but other than that, you don't know for sure. All you need to know is there is a lot of... Hate? I don't know the right word. Maybe misunderstanding fits better.

Truthfully, I was terrified to read this. Scared that it wouldn't amount to anything and I would waste a few hours of my life.
That wasn't the case. No, this isn't an epic tale, but I loved it so much more because of that.
TGATG was a light, simple read. Don't let that fool you, though. There is still a good plot line. One that will carry on for a sequel, Queen Of The Dead.
I really enjoyed reading from both perspectives. You got to see what it was like for the dead and the dead-talker.

Alona is a witch with a capital B! She made me mad a few times. I just wanted to shake her and yell, "Open your eyes! The world doesn't revolve around you!" But then I would remember she was dead... and a book character... I also sympathized with Alona at moments. She is stuck on Earth, not knowing when or if that white light will come for her. So she gets to see everything that was really going on around her. I'd hate to learn the things that she did.
She grows a lot from page one to page 281. A slight transformation begins and she sees life wasn't as perfect for her as she thought. And she realizes this with the help of Will.
My heart went out to Will. He has it rough. I don't know how I would cope with being able to see/talk/touch dead people and then no one believes me. Everyone thinks he is some psycho, but really he is just a misunderstood, extremely gifted, teen. Luckily, though, he does have a best friend. And she is there for him. Picks him up whenever all the craziness brings him down.
Together, Alona and Will learn about each other and themselves.
Back to my earlier question. Romance or no? I'll just say, if there is one, I am totally 100% okay with it!

Stacey Kade is an extremely talented writer. She knows exactly how to describe in just enough detail. The plot flowed perfectly with a few "Aha!" moments. Be sure to keep your eyes open. You don't want to miss a moment.

As I have mentioned many of times before, I am in love with the cover! The colors. Alona and Will. It's perfect! I would love to have a poster, it's that awesome. (I'd stick it right beside my Sea and City of Glass posters!) And Queen of The Dead is just as awesome!

My Review

Every so often you find that one person who seems to make everything work. You find little flaw in what they do. Right now, that person is Lauren Oliver. Her writing captivated us all with Before I Fall and she has done it yet again with her upcoming novel, Delirium.
From the second you open this book, you are sucked into an unbelievable world. Everything falls perfectly into place as you read. Details are so spot on, you can close your eyes and watch everything unfold in your mind.

You follow 17 year old Lena Haloway as she discovers not everything in life is as people say they are.
All her life, she has waited for her cure. She never wanted to go through the pain that comes with the disease of love. Counting down the days until she can be normal. But, of course, nothing will go the way she plans.
Enter extremely hot and swoon worthy Alex. This boy is not who he seems to be. But one thing is for sure. He loves Lena and Lena loves him. And together they are delirious with love.

I cannot tell you how many times I held my breath in anticipation while reading Delirium. This novel is pure beauty. Every moment you are rooting on Lena and Alex, hoping for the happiest ending ever!
The world they live in is coated in fear. And throughout the novel, that coat starts to crack and eyes are opened to see how wrong somethings are.
Lena and Alex are two of my favorite book characters. Apart, they are great people. They each have their own ways of doing things. But together, they fit amazingly, like two halves of a whole. They might be good separately, but together they are a force to be reckoned with!
I could go on and on about how much I love Delirium! The best word to describe Lauren Oliver's writing and story is: Perfection. Genius would also work.

This is the first in a trilogy. Just a heads up! Take from that what you will. [Pandemonium (Book 2) Requiem (Book 3)]
And ***WARNING: TEARJERKER*** So be sure to have a box of tissues by your side. You will definitely need them!!!
I recommend this to anyone who loves love. So, just about everyone!

1. Can you describe yourself in one sentence?

I would say that I’m intelligent, loyal, and sensible---though I know some people prefer to think of me as uptight.

We all know you like having power and being top dog, if you could do ANYTHING without any back fire or consequences, what would you do?

Just for the record, I don’t have some evil master plan. I believe in doing what is best in the long run even if that means some momentary unhappiness. That said, if I could, I’d want to use certain abilities I possess to convince government officials and leaders in the medical community to do more drug testing on humans instead animals. The current medical model for testing on animals is absurd. Many lab rats are obese, diabetic, and close to death before trials even begin. This means that medicines that could save lives aren’t reaching the human testing stage because unhealthy rodents can’t handle what might be very mild side effects in humans. And I’m sure there are people with inoperable tumors and fatal diseases who’d like to use the small amount of time they have left to advance medicine. Performing experimental treatments on humans could lead to a cure for cancer, and I think some people would choose to make that difference if they were just given the chance. I know my grandfather would be more than willing to test anti-dementia drugs so that others could benefit from treatment options he didn’t have. But sentimentality clouds judgment, and ruling parties almost always take the path of least resistance. I think it would probably take mind control to get the ‘higher ups’ to make the right decision.

How do you feel about Persephone being in Shadow Hills? And please, don't hold anything back!

I definitely have some issues with Persephone. I mean, you don’t have to be around her for long to see that she makes all her decisions based on illogical feelings instead of rational thought. (Anyone who would choose to go to a cemetery alone on the first day that she's in a new town obviously doesn't think before she acts.) She’s reckless and unpredictable, and that isn’t the kind of influence Zach needs---he’s already got one loose cannon with Brody. Now I would never suggest that Zach abandon his best friend---I saw what Brody went through with his parents, and I know he needs some stability in his life---but Zach is too easily swayed by his emotions as it is. Being with a girl like Persephone is just going to weaken Zach’s self-control, something he already has far too little of, in my opinion.

Is there anything you would like to change in your life right now?

I wish I was already at Harvard studying to get my medical degree. It’s probably the only way I’m going to be able to make a difference in anyone’s life since no matter how sound my advice is, people never seem to take it. It’s impossible for me to stand idly by and let my brother make what I know is a terrible mistake, but all my arguments seem to do is make him mad at me. In the end, Zach will do whatever he wants to do, and I’d prefer to not be here to watch his world fall apart because of a silly crush.

5) If you could tell your brother one thing without repercussion, what would it be?

My brother doesn’t remember what it was like when he was a child, before he could control his telekinetic abilities, but I do. Whenever he got angry, heavy objects would slam into walls, glass would shatter spontaneously, knives would fly towards the nearest magnetic field---which could be a refrigerator… or a person. Anytime my parents left the room I had to not only protect myself, but also shield Zach from his own powers. I can’t NOT protect Zach now---that’s what I was raised to do. My contingency plans were how we both survived his unpredictable temper.

But I know if I told Zach about all that he would feel responsible for every problem our family has ever had. He’d blame himself for things he didn’t mean to do and things that weren’t even his fault, and I don’t want that for him either. I just want to make Zach understand that I’m trying to keep him safe because I want him to have a good life.

My Review

Okay, admit it. You want to read Unearthly even more every time you read the synopsis or see the cover (which I think is blue and not purple, like the above picture. My ARC is purple, but GoodReads and B&N have it as blue. If you know, leave a comment!).

Unearthly is unlike any other Angel YA novel flying around. You may be saying "Pshh. Of course you're going to say that!" But it's true! Take everything you think about this book and throw it all away, before you read it. Whether you are excited or not. Go into this read with an open mind. Trust me. You want nothing clouding your judgment.

I am head over heels in love with this novel. Cynthia Hand has a certain sort of magic when she writes. Every word came to life. Every page made me want more!
The storyline has quite a few "OHMYGOSH!" and "WHOA NOW!" moments that keep you hooked past the last page.

As Clara learns about her Purpose, you are thrown into loop after loop after curve. You never really know what is going to happen next. And Clara is the perfect pair of eyes to see through. She has spunk and knows what she wants, even when she doesn't realize it.
For those 448 pages, you feel like you are her. Going through everything she is.
All the characters had their own flare. When you meet them, you want to really know them. Even those characters you love to hate.
My favorite would definitely have to be Tucker. Why? Well... *SWOON*!!! He is gorgeous, sweet, nice. Everything you want in a guy. You'll see why he has made my top favorite YA boys when you read Unearthly.

The only thing that bothered me while reading, was the end. It all just kind of rushed together. A few things were left unanswered to me. Hopefully that will be fixed in Book 2. Because there has to be a Book 2. Because I need more Tucker Avery!!!

All in all, fantastic, beautiful novel. I recommend this to everyone. You will all find something you love about Unearthly!

Hey, there! Remember me?

I know, I know. I haven't posted in weeks... Depressing, right? Let's all blame life and not enough hours in the day.
First I spent a week at my grandparents without a computer. Came home and my computer dies for a few days.
Then I went on a job hunt. I found a job and started working a lot. I was then way too tired to actually sit at my desk and type. Now, November is here, which means NaNoWriMo is here, which means I am writing in every minute of extra time I have.
Do you see why I have been neglecting you? I know you see me complain on Twitter about how I am way too busy anymore.
But, hopefully, I will soon learn how to manage my time a little better.
This is the sad part. The only thing I can find to cut out of my daily routine, to add extra time, is Twitter. NO I AM NOT SAYING I AM LEAVING TWITTER. If I ever leave Twitter, it will be because I am dead. (Morbid much, Courtney?) Maybe not even then... *evil laugh*
I will just tweet less. I have SO MUCH to do! Reviews and a novel to write, and what not.
Again. *Hopefully* I can get everything on the right track and get back into my normal routine. But right now, it's not going to happen.

Look for mini reviews, NaNoWriMo updates, and life updates soon. And if ANYTHING major happens and you think I haven't heard about it, yet, let me know ASAP! I stalk comments and tweets whenever I can.

Darkness: Part 8

    Not many things could scare Jeremy, but the thought of the demon he had once defeated rising from the dead to get his revenge, caused him to tremble in terror. His fear crept through him slowly like ivy creeping up thea side of a tomb. It was years ago in this very graveyard, maybe in this very spot that Jeremy had conquered the demon.
    Jeremy felt the stolen blood in his veins being funneled out from the wound of the necromancer’s dagger. It dripped from his stomach and was greedily absorbed into the graveyard’s dirt. Where his blood nourished the soil a circular black shape grew, spreading, poisoning the earth as it seeped out further. Despite his usual courage, Jeremy shied away from it, his heightened senses overwhelmed by the rancid taste of evil, more evil than the monster he was. It lanced through his taste buds and the foul smell of demon burned his nostrils. His terror drew out his fangs and he hissed at the necromancer who still glistened in the moonlight without form.
    “What have you done?” Jeremy demanded, struggling against his captor.
    He had been prepared to spring away but the zombie’s grip had tightened, crushing Jeremy’s old bones. He used the only tool he had available and bit down hard into the zombie rotting flesh, tearing at it with his sharp teeth. He ripped into the decaying arm, gagging on the rancid flavor, until the zombie howled in pain and dropped Jeremy, raging in agony.
    Jeremy leapt to his freedom and landed in a crouch. He studied the dark formless mass that the necromancer had shifted into, wondering how he could fight an enemy without form. It was then he felt the slimy, frigid presence, inhaled the stench of true evil and the memories of the demon he thought he had destroyed cluttered his mind.
    The same helpless fear he had felt in the long ago battle stole around him like an unwanted scratchy blanket. Snarling with a bravado he didn’t feel, Jeremy swung around, bracing himself for the horror he knew would be waiting for him.
    The demon roared, his bright red eyes flickering like candles in the darkness as his inky black arms reached toward Jeremy.
    Jeremy tried to leap aside but having lost so much blood, was too slow and the demon’s fingers grabbed the collar of his shirt, then settled across Jeremy’s neck, pulling him close. His fiery breath that smelled of death and endless torment blew in Jeremy’s face.
    “It was your blood that sentenced me to that prison and it was your blood that brought me back, but did you know it was your precious Anna’s blood I feasted on all those years I was there?”
    The wound in his stomach, the grip of the demon’s fingers across his throat and even his own terror were nothing compared to the horror those words caused. His mind tried to stop the words from escaping, knowing it was part of the demon’s game, but his aching heart rushed them from his mouth.
   “You have Anna? But you can’t have her. She’s dead isn’t she?” Jeremy’s fist clenched. “Isn’t she?”
    The fire in the demon’s eyes crackled and his smile revealed jagged teeth as a low rumble of laughter burst out from the demon’s mouth, like a sea of broken glass crashing into Jeremy’s heart.

Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is finally out for the world to read!
Are you saying, "What are you talking about, Courtney?" Well you should get off your booty and run to the nearest book seller. There you should find Beautiful Creatures, Book 1 in The Caster Chronicles. Buy it. I recommend you buy Beautiful Darkness while you're there, too. Trust me, you will want BD as soon as you finish BC.
From there, go to your favorite reading spot (if you are in a room, lock the door so no one can bother you). And READ, READ, READ!

My Review

I had never heard of this book until Kelsey received it in the mail, donated it to an ARC tour, and told me to join the tour. After reading the synopsis, I was very excited to have a chance to read it. Sounded...interesting.

You follow Alex, a teen who has had some troubles with family. Her and her mom have moved to a new town. New town means new school, and that means new friends.
Here she meets Fred, a strange boy whom she has an odd attraction to. But it's not that simple. Fred has a twin sister, Adina. The two of them have a very close relationship and the attraction for Fred spreads to an attraction toward Adina. Everyone is telling Alex that the family is weird and she should stay away from them. But she can't. She has to know more about the twins.

As you read HAMAY, you will also have an attraction to the twins and every other character. The lives of the characters Lauren created are captivating and intriguing. Every strange turn you want to know more.
And the writing is beautiful, somewhat dark.

Strap on your seat belts for this read! It's gonna be one bumpy ride!

My Review

Happiness. Joy. Excitement. Those are just a few ways I felt when I found DotD in my mailbox. Needless to say, nothing got done until I finished it. The Body Finder is one of my favorite novels, so I knew DotD was going to be fantastic!

Kimberly Derting knows exactly how to keep readers on the edge of their seats and always wanting more! And with every turn of a page, that is what happened. I have said before, not a lot of sequels live up to the first book, but DotD did!
We jump back into the life of Violet Ambrose. She still has her friends, her morbid ability, and her super hot, perfect best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay.
All seems okay in the beginning. Well, more than okay. Perfect. I mean, have you seen her boy friend?! Hot! And their relationship is just as amazing. For those wondering? Yes, there are plenty of Violet/Jay scenes. Very nice Violet/Jay scenes! But not everything can be perfect for too long. A new family moves into town and everyone loves them, except for Violet. And shortly after that, echoes start calling for her to find them. And, of course, in typical Violet fashion, she responds to their calls. Things just snowball from there.

The writing is believable. You feel a very strong connection with all the characters. Kimberly Derting definitely has a special way with words. Never did I find myself wanting to hurry the book up and finish because it was dragging on. Every moment is filled with something. Action, fear, romance. It’s all there, always giving you what you want.
The storyline was a lot darker than TBF. Violet is depressed a good amount of the time and you just want to give her a big hug and tell her “It’s okay”. And of course she is always doing things her way when it comes to finding the truth about the dead bodies. Not much will stop her from putting them to rest.
Back to those Violet/Jay scenes; I will warn you, they are a teen couple. Teen couples like to make out and do…stuff… Just throwing that out there, just in case.
Oh, and remember Chelsea? She is back full blast! Even though she is makes me feel like life is going 100 mph, her character is one of my favorites.

To put simply, I love this book/series. I recommend it to just about anyone that is a fan of YA. I keep seeing people ask “Should I read this book?” My answer will always be YES! Don’t delay. Read it now. Put it to the top of your TBR pile.

I think that about covers it for this review. I know I will read back and want to add more and more, but won’t. Because I know if I start talking now, I probably will not stop and will ruin the story for you!

My Review

Let's take a moment to ogle this cover. So. Freaking. Pretty. There are gorgeous covers on many books, but this one tops the list. The gold tones and the reds - beautiful!

From the very first page, you are sucked into the world of Draki and into the mind of Jacinda. You fall in love with every last word within those 336 pages. Countless amounts of times I found myself holding my breath.

Jacinda is a unique, one-of-a-kind girl, even though she is a twin, and it's not just because she is a fire Draki. She loves who she is and doesn't mind what others think of her. But when she has an idea and goes with it, she puts herself, and her Pride, in danger. Consequences must be suffered. Her family leaves the Pride before the worst of it can happen.
Where they move, though, smothers her Draki, and Jacinda isn't happy. Then she meets Will. Hot Will, whose family has a secret. They hunt Draki. Even though Jacinda should stay as far away from him as possible, she can't. There is an inexplicable pull toward him that awakens her Draki. And she likes it.

Remember, this is YA literature. There is a guaranteed web of secret, lies, loss, love, and every emotion you can think of. And it is fantastic! You want to stay tangled up in this web forever. This world is beautiful and dark and fast paced. You will cry the last page because you realize you just devoured this book too fast and now you have to wait for Book 2. Then you may or may not read it again.

All the characters hold their own. Each had their own personality. I felt like I either was them, knew them, or wanted to know them.

Beautiful cover. Beautiful storyline. Beautiful writing. Don't deprive yourself. Read Firelight.
Move aside vamps and weres. There's a new paranormal in town. Draki's are in.

I will always be the first to admit that there are many stupid jerk face asshats in the world. Today I learned of the one who tops the charts. Wesley Scroggins.
Most of us have been seeing his name float around the web today. Why, you ask? Because he had the audacity to call out 2 amazing books and say they need to be banned from school curriculum's.

The books in question - Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler.
Really, Scroggins? REALLY?!
According to him, the rape scenes in Speak are “soft core pornography”. And the drunken teens and sex scenes in Twenty Boy Summer are unacceptable, asking “How can Christian men and women expose children to such immorality?” Adding “Parents, it is time you get involved!”
Mr. Scroggins, are you living in a fucking fantasy world?
Oh, and yeah, I said fuck. Because guess what, that happens in real life! Just like people getting raped and teens getting drunk. It happens. It’s not pretty, but that is life.
Young Adults need to learn about this now, before it’s too late. No need to sugar coat anything. If that IS what you want, leave. Goodbye. Don’t let the door hit you in your way out. Go find some other planet that doesn’t have these issues, because it’s sure as hell not Earth.
And I’m pretty sure, I could be wrong though, that most schools ask for parent permission before they start a new book. If that is the case and you don’t want your child to participate and learn about these things, just check NO and move on with your life.

This guy needs to open his eyes and see the truth. I wonder how it feels to be one of the most hated men in America right now?

We all need to SPEAK LOUDLY, get our voices heard, let people know how we feel about the truth. This won’t work if we let them Ban Books to cover up the bad things in life.
If you feel strong enough about something, please don’t hold it in. Tell everyone how you really feel.

My Review

You want my honest opinion, right? That is why you come to this here blog. To find out what I thought about a certain book.
Well, I was absolutely terrified of HTSGIR. When I first heard about it, I ran the other way quite fast. It didn't call out to me. So for the past almost year, I stayed away from it.
But then I went to the Library. It was one of the first books I found while searching the shelves. What did I do when I laid eyes on it? I grabbed it, deciding "What the heck! Give it a shot!" So, I did.
AND I REGRET WAITING SO LONG TO READ HTSGIR!

The storyline is something I had never considered I would like. But there was something about it.
Maybe it was the witty humor? Or the strange ways of Bea and Jonah? I'm not sure what I loved the most, I just know that I DID actually enjoy it. From page 1 to 288, I was mesmerized by the words Natalie Standiford wrote.

The characters are fun and make an impact on you. Bea is quirky and sweet. She just sort of goes with the flow people around her make. But then she meets Jonah. Jonah is also known as Ghost Boy. He is quiet and keeps his distance from everyone. Hardly ever speaking a word.
Bea and Jonah have an instant connection, and you, the reader, feel it, too.
Every moment they were together, which was most, you go through what they go through. And I will admit, I got so engrossed in it, I cried.
They both have family issues and they cause major turns.

I never wanted this book to end. Recommended for contemp fans, fans of quirky reads, and lovers of friendship.

My Review

Ever since I first heard about Caleb + Kate, I knew it was going to be a favorite of mine. And it was.
Let's start with the cover. It is beautiful. Simple, yet eye catching. You can feel the love flowing off of it. It's big to have such a great cover, because, unfortunately, a lot of people judge books by their cover. I know I do that sometimes. But with C+K, the cover screams "Read me! Read me!" So I did.

The storyline follows the same road as Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but adds a twist to it. Don't let that throw you! It's a very good twist, in my opinion.
I fell into the tangled lives of Caleb and Kate very easily. Both had their own issues they are dealing with, but some of their problems over lap. Like the fact that their families aren't exactly friends. So, C and K are practically hard wired to not care about each other. But this is a YA book. Things never go the way they are planned! You can guess where I am going with this, right?

Caleb + Kate then begin the roller coaster of love and life. You have your ups, your downs, your loopty-loops. And every single moment, you are rooting them on!

Happiness, love, loss, and friendship are all woven beautifully together. Cindy has written such a gorgeous story that will leave you wanting more!

1) Can you describe Vampyre Kisses in one sentence?
A great friggin’ book. Haha. J/K. I am not that egotistical. How about … An exhilarating story of blood, magic, and claws. I like it!

2) I understand that you enjoy Greek Mythology. Does it play a role in Vampyre Kisses?
Oh yes, it plays a huge role in Vampyre Kisses and it is actually what most people love about the book. The Greek mythology and folklore with my own twist. This is what I have been reading. Actually I am quite surprised. When I would write my query letters some agents would want you to describe your hook. I never thought that this was my hook but apparently it really works and people can’t get enough of it. I really think that if I had written a better query letter I might have actually gotten an agent instead of doing the self-publishing thing. But, not the point, I have always been fascinated with mythology and folklore of all kinds. I even took a class for it in college at George Mason University. It just always intrigued me and I really wanted to include it in my own story.

3) Has writing a novel always been a dream of yours? And if you weren't a writer, what is another dream job of yours?
I can say that no, it was not a dream of mine. I always remember loving to write, but when I was younger I wanted to be an actress/singer on Broadway. I took tons of classes and was always in plays when I was younger. But when I moved from California to Delaware I didn’t get the opportunities to continue the acting lessons and what not. Mostly cause so much else was happening. So I started writing more.
Actually, I almost wrote my first book when I was 13. I was looking through my files and found the book it was around 90,000 words. So almost there. Then later on when I was 18/19 I started Vampyre Kisses. I think it was more of just for fun and that is why it took me so long to finish. I just have a really exhausting imagination and if I don’t put something on paper I feel like I will burst. So in short, if not a writer I would probably want to be an actress/singer on stage. __________

Here is my chapter section of 'Half Moon':

“Don’t worry about it,” Brandon offered me his hand, “we won’t be long.” He smiled and cautiously interlocked his fingers through mine, one of the few times he’d actually touched me since bringing I’d ran away with him. The sensation of his skin on mine sent chills of excitement rushing through my body, making me wonder if my doubt was just that and nothing more.
“I’m sorry I left you this morning.” He leaned against one of the trees. Nicole sat less than fifteen feet away, but with her back to us, it gave the illusion of privacy. Brandon linked his other hand around mine and rubbed the back of my hands with his thumbs. My heart jumped when he pulled me closer and drew my hands up to his mouth to kiss them. The tenderness and intimacy of that one moment made me wish we were alone. His hot breath lingered against my cool skin a moment longer before he finally rested our clasped hands against his chest, letting me feel his accelerated heartbeat. “I don’t know what has happened between us. We seemed to be right on track… then—nothing. We became strangers all over again.”
“I know.” I searched his face, anticipating what he wanted to say. It was obvious there was more treading behind his unauthorized appearance. What could have been so important for him to defy his father to have me alone, even for the briefest moment?"

Today, I thought I would try something different. I'm going to post 25 books that are not only favorites of mine, but should be essential to your reading list.
No, these 25 are not my only favorites. I just narrowed down my list to these particular ones. Either I saw a lot of people questioning reading it or I feel the need to talk about the book some more.
The list is in no particular order. So, just because it's first or last on the list, does NOT mean they are my most favorite and my least.
Now that all that is cleared up, if not even more confusing, let's get down to book business!

- Sea by Heidi R. Kling - This novel is brilliant. Months before it came out, people were talking about it. Months after, people are still talking about it. Sea is definitely a must read for anyone of any age. I can tell you what my best friend is getting for her birthday...

- When It Happens by Susane Colasanti - I have a very strong love for Susane Colasanti novels. All YA contemp. All awesome in their own way. When It Happens is my favorite of them all, though. I love the alternating point of views. And the young love and realistic situations give you hope and make you believe in fate.

- Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken - I have read Brightly Woven numerous times and every read is just like the first time. I get sucked into the life of Syd and don't come out until after the last page. The cover is what drew me in to read it and the pages between the cover is just as breath taking.

- North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley - I picked this book up because there was no other book in stock I wanted. Turns out, getting this book was one of the best things to ever happen to me. North of Beautiful is just that, beautiful. From page to page to page, I was wanting more and loving what I got.

- City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments 1) by Cassandra Clare - I know most of y'all have read this series. If you are like me, you have read it more than once. But for those of you still wondering if it is worth reading, wonder no longer and go pick it up right this very second. I mean, would I have named my puppy Jace if it wasn't awesome?

- The Hunger Games (THG 1) by Suzanne Collins -Yes, Mockingjay just released. Yes, everyone know about this series. No, not everyone has read it. Some people have been hesitant to begin it. Doubting it lives up to the hype. Trust me, it does. Book after book you will crave more.

- Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl - I can sit here and talk all day about this book and it's sequel, Beautiful Darkness. Magnificent. I always recommend Beautiful Creatures to anyone in need of a fantastic read.

- Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

- Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers - Read my review here. I would like to add: OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS BOOK! That is all.

- The Iron King by Julie Kagawa - This is a magical series. I rarely find a book dealing with Fey that I absolutely love. That changed when I found The Iron King. I have yet to find someone who didn't like it.

- Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles - I would probably add all of Simone's to this list, but I have a rule of only posting an author once on here. So, I chose Perfect Chemistry. It was the very first S.E. book I read, which started my fangirlness. Alternating point of views, young love, realistic situations. And the writing is true to teen. There are 2 more in the PC series. All three deal with a different Fuentes brother.

- Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick - I don't need to say too much about this series. Just that you will most likely love it!

My Review

Werewolves. Since the beginning of time, from the very first scary story ever told, Werewolves have always been grotesque. Made from nightmares. But over the past few years, Weres have transformed from feral creatures, to gorgeous, model like paranorms. Made from daydreams. (Not that I'm complaining! :D )
Recently, I have been turned into a wolf girl. And I have Shannon Delany to thank for that!

Jessie Gillmansen did not count on coming to school to show around the new student. Definitely not on her to do list. All she wanted was to live her life without any change. But every since her mother's death, everything has been changing. Including the residence of Junction. And I do mean changing. Pietr Rusakova, the new guy with gorgeous looks, has a secret. Now Jessie's biggest fear - change - is coming true.

I instantly loved Jessie. She knows what she wants and will do what she can for it. And she has smarts. Though I may argue with that statement when it comes to her boy smarts! I did have a few times were I wanted to shake her and yell "What is wrong with you!?!" But that is when we know we are connecting with the characters we are reading.
Speaking of connections, I loved the one between Jessie and Pietr. They are great together. Bickering a lot, yes. But that always means so much more than it is.

Pietr was a fantastic character. You could tell he had something he always wanted to say to Jessie, but couldn't bring himself to do it. Well, because he wasn't allowed to. Whenever he was in the scene you could tell that Jessie lit up, and you lit up with her!

The storyline is wonderful. I thought I had everything figured out when I first started reading, but there are so many shocking moments you aren't expecting. That makes a great book. Expect the unexpected. Keeps you on your toes.

The ending leaves you wanting a lot more. More Jessie. More Junction. Definitely more Pietr!
If you are a wolf fan. Or a paranormal fan. Or a young love fan. You should pick up 13 to Life by Shannon Delany!

My Review

When Erin Downing writes, she writes realistic situations. The first book I read from her was Drive Me Crazy ( A Romantic Comedies Novel) and I absolutely loved it! When I heard she had another masterpiece on the way, I knew I had to get my hands on it!

Kiss It was great! A lot different than what I expected, but in the best possible way.
The first chapter can tell a lot about a book, but then other times, it says nothing. BUt it will give insight on if you will like it or not. Read the first chapter here.
Now I'll go ahead and warn you. Kiss It deals with mature content. So I only recommend this book to mature audiences.

When we first meet Chastity Bryan, she comes across quite flamboyant. Not in the "Look at me! Look at me! Center of the universe, here!". More along the lines of "I don't give a fuck what you think of me. I'll say what I want!". But truth is, everyone cares. Even Chaz.
Sex is a big topic in Kiss It. Chaz brings it up whenever she can. It's pretty much all that is on her mind. No, she is not a slut, she is just infatuated with the act of it.
I thought, that with how frivolous Chaz acted at first, that this would be a light read. Yes, it was at some parts, but over all it is very emotional. Things happen to Chaz that makes her world turn upside down, and you will get so into the book, you will feel how she feels.
Like I said, Erin Downing's writing is realistic.

Chaz grows throughout the story. She learns more about herself and the facts of life. Especially when Sebastian, a very hot, very mysterious boy, walks into the restaurant/bar she works at. She is in for a big wake up call that lust isn't all there is. Love really does exist somewhere.
Character development. It's here. It's good.

The ending is, again, realistic. Not everyone needs a fairytale ending to be happy.

I loved Kiss It by Erin Downing. I have already read it multiple times and plan on picking it up some more.
Mature content intended for mature audiences.

My Review

If you follow me on twitter, you have probably seen me tweet about how I can not wait for Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers, multiple times. It border lined obsessive. But I had good reasoning. I mean did you read the sneaks on Lisa's blog? No? Well, go here now, and then come back. Go on. I'll wait for you.

Sounds amazing, right?! No wonder I spazzed out every time Lisa mentioned Personal Demons. I'm sure she got a kick out of being such a tease.

Anyway, a couple weeks back, the awesome Lisa Desrochers sent me an ARC of PD.
*commence freak out*
Did PD live up to my expectations? Yes! Actually, it surpassed my expectations.

I love the idea of PD. You have Hell and you have Heaven. Both fighting for one girls' soul. Neither bargaining that once that get there, it's not just her soul they both want.
You read from 2 perspectives. Frannie Cavanaugh and Luc Cain. I enjoy books that change each chapter. It gives you more insight into the characters minds (i.e. Perfect Chemistry and Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles).
Lisa Desrochers wrote PD beautifully. You believe everything that is on the pages. You fall into the minds of the characters, easily.

Speaking of the characters... Frannie is a kick ass teenage girl. She is from a catholic family, but you wouldn't know that if she didn't tell you. This girl has a wild streak. And when Hell comes into her life, literally, that doesn't help.
Luc. Scorching hot, Luc. He gives the phrase "Hotter than hell" a new meaning. Not that I'm complaining. :)
You would expect a Level 1 demon, sent for a mark, to do his job and get done. That is what he had planned. But then he laid eye on Frannie, and his hellish world turned upside down. But he is still has a job to do. But can he get it done before Heaven steps in? I am Team Luc. He makes my knees weak and my heart beat faster. *SWOON*
Gabe. Lighter, and lovelier, than Heaven itself. He shows up, right after Luc, for the same thing. The big man upstairs wants Frannie's soul, too. But, just like Luc, somewhere between vying for her soul, he started vying for all of Frannie.

The entire book you are on the edge of your seat. Gripping the page edges, waiting for the next big thing to happen. And you don't have to wait long, for Personal Demons is fast paced. Except when it needs to be slow... :)

The ending definitely leaves you salivating for more. Now we just have to wait for Original Sin, Book 2 in the Personal Demons series.

As you read Personal Demons, you will notice music plays a major role. Especially "You Found Me" by The Fray. Lisa says (taken from Twitter. @LisaDez) "The Fray songs keep demanding that I write them into books. Orignial Sin is How To Save a Life."
"You Found Me" is perfect for PD. You will see what I mean when you read it!
Another song I think fits Personal Demons is "Drumming Song" by Florence and The Machine.

My Review

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White is everything we all expected it to be. I knew I would love it from all that I had heard about it, but never did I realize how much I would LOVE it! Does that make any sense to you? No probably not. My mind is going a million miles per hour trying to put together complete sentences about how amazing this book is. Okay. Breathe, Courtney. *deep breath*

Alright, I think I'm good to go on, now.

[The best way to describe this book is like this: (A tweet I sent to @NovelistLauren) A teen girl, Evie, works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency. She thought she was normal, but she isn't. Throw in a faerie prophecy and a hot shape shifter. Stir it together with some trouble... And you have the awesomeness that is Paranormalcy! :) ]

The storyline is different. It holds its own in this vast sea of copy cat books.
The writing flows. You are constantly moving from one scene to another. No where, do I believe, you were stuck thinking "When is this going to end!?" Which wins a lot of awesome points in my book. If there isn't rhythm in a story, I quickly lose interest. That was not the case here.
You follow Evie. A teen who helps bag and tag paranorms for IPCA. Now, why would she be doing that job? Well, Evie can see through a paranormal's glamour. She can pick out vampires, faeries, hags just by looking at them. Major asset to the Agency. But why does she have this ability?

The characters keep you on your toes. Evie is fun and lively, but she is contained to this one place and is getting to be antsy. She starts to question why she is there when someone new enters IPCA. There is a shapeshifter, he is hot, and he is turning around Evies life. Lend. His background intrigues me. I loved learning about him and hope we can learn more in the sequel.
There is a faerie vying for Evies heart, too. Reth. But don't let his beautiful face deceive you. I'm just saying.
My favorite character of all, is Evies best friend, Lish, who is a mermaid. She is a great friend to Evie. And she cusses by saying "BLEEP".

The ending throws you for a loop. A very good loop! I saw it coming, I had an idea being conjured up by my imagination. But the real thing beats out what I thought by miles!

If you love paranormals. If you love young love. If you love kick ass teen girls with pink tasers. READ THIS BOOK!

My Review

We have all been hearing about The Duff and about the 18 year old college student behind it. Kody Keplinger has us all waiting for September 10th, when her debut novel will hit stores. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to borrow a copy. Boy, am I glad I didn’t have to wait!

The Duff: Designated Ugly Fat Friend.
When I first heard the definition I knew exactly what it meant. Why? Because I see myself as that friend. When I read the Duff, I knew it. And the fact that I knew about what it was, made the experience of reading it that much more great. I brought this up to my friends and they said that that is how they feel, also. This is brought up in the book. Everyone feels like a Duff.

The story line is wonderful. Bianca, 17 year old girl, has some hard times in life and it all seems to double when the school hottie and playboy, Wesley Rush, tells her she is The Duff. Then nicknames her Duffy. After that, things snowball into one big mess. And Bianca needs a getaway. She gets it, but definitely in the last place she expects.

The writing is realistic. I could definitely see the plot happening. At least I hope it would.

The characters all had flaws, but that only made them better. Bianca reminded me of myself. I am a very cynical person and so is she. I connected with her, which is always what you want to do while reading. It makes loving the book easier.
Wesley is a notorious playboy. He will get with any girl he can, which is just about everyone. Through the book, you will see subtle changes in him. Good, subtle changes. Which will pan out in the end.
Bianca’s best friends made me happy and pissed me off all at the same time. If you think about, that is exactly how best friends are. They are great friends to Bianca, but they also push her to go partying when she doesn’t want to and one of them is very ditsy.
When it came to Bianca’s parents, you could feel exactly how she felt. Her home life isn’t all that great and you sympathize with her.

I won’t say much about the ending, because I know I will keep gushing and no one will be able to stop me.
I’ll leave it at: Great! Every teen girl should read this. They may see that they are not alone in the world. Everyone thinks they are a Duff, at least once in their life.

Today I am very honored to have Lauren Hammond guest posting on Courtney Reads! Her novella, Love Sucks, released August 3rd, 2010.

I asked her how she became an author. Read the post below to see her answer!

"I truly believe that there are so many talented individuals in the world. Whether you act, paint, or in my case write, you should always use your gift and never take it for granted.

My love for writing began when I was a young child. I would often carry around notebooks, and jot down all the magical stories I came up with. In my opinion, when you know that early on, that you love something more than anything else that means it's something you are truly destined to do. I started my writing career at the age of eight, and I haven't stopped since.

I didn't make the initial move to write a book until I was about twenty one. I had a great tragedy that occured in my life and that brought all of my writing goals to the surface. On July 20, 2006 one of my best friends, Andria Price and her three young daughters died in a house fire. I was determined to dedicate the book to them and start a scholarship in Andria's name. From then on my writing career took off.

It wasn't exactly what you'd call a lucretive writing career in the beginning. I didn't even own my own computer and I would drive 15 miles everyday, every chance I had to put my thoughts down on the computer screen. I never let that slow me down though. I never let one minor road block stand in my way when it came to what I loved to do. And that is writing. In this field, you face a million people telling you no everyday. No, no, no, no, no. No in the publishing industry seems to be the word of the decade. J.K Rowling never let the word no stop her, and I wasn't going to let it stop me either. It only takes one person to like what you've written, and it may take you years to find that one person but trust me, they are out there.

I began writing Love Sucks based on a vision I had of Cara Jones,(the main character) punching her first through the lid of her coffin and it was onward and upward from there. I originally wrote this novel as a screenplay back in 2007, and months later, went back to it. There was so much more of her story that needed to be told and I knew I had to fill in the blanks. Creating characters in books, or in any other writing genre are key. I spent a good amount of time developing a character I thought my readers could relate to. I can't stress how important that is.

In closing, I need to tell you self belief is so important. Never doubt yourself, ever. We as humans, are unique individuals, and we are capable of anything we put our minds to. Love Sucks began as a vivid vision, neslted deep inside my imagination. It's extremely exciting the way it has taken off. I made a promise to myself along time ago, that I would keep writing as long as my fingers work, and that'd I'd keep writing books that not only I found entertaining but, ones that my readers found entertaining as well.

Now, I only have one thing left to say, Are you ready to be sucked in?"

My Review

For months before it was released into the world, Anastasia Hopcus’ Shadow Hills has been causing buzz. Very good buzz, at that! When I finally got a copy to read for myself, I instantly knew why.
Anastasia has written a beautiful story about a town full of secrets and young love. Both of which I enjoy.

After her sister’s mysterious death, strange things have been happening to Phe. She doesn’t know what is going on, but she does know that she needs to go to Shadow Hills, where her sister had been planning on going. But when Phe finally gets there, she realizes there is something off about the town.
Determined to know more, Phe searches through the school, looking for answers. What she stumbles upon isn’t normal. Hundreds of years back, an epidemic spread through the town. Killing everyone except the “townies”. Why did they survive? And why do the “townies” act strange?
Throughout the novel, Phe unlocks secrets that seem to be connected to her. But how? And in between all this she meets a boy name Zach, a “townie”. Something is different about him, just like everyone else. And, you guessed it, they have very strong feelings for each other.

I loved this novel. The idea is not exactly new, but it’s also not worn out. Girl who faced a tragic loss goes to a new school. This new school happens to be strange and has a hot boy. Girl gets tied up in it all. Girl and Boy fall in love.
Yes we have read that story line a considerable amount of times. But Shadow Hills was different. It may have possessed some of the same qualities, but it is definitely unique.

The main characters were all great. Phe is a very unique girl. She does her own thing and doesn’t really follow any clique lines. Zach is H-O-T. HOT! The two of them together was perfect. They are definitely one of my favorite YA lit couples.
Some of the side characters were fun, but not very memorable. Though a few did make an impact on the story and you could never forget them.

The ending was kind of shocking, but you catch yourself saying “I knew it! I just knew it!” You are left with one or two unanswered questions. Does this mean a sequel? Hmm… I hope so!

Shadow Hills is dark, yet very fun read.

My Review

Lauren Kate amazed us all with Fallen. We were also left wanting more. More Luce. More Angel. More Cam. And definitely more Daniel!
I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of Torment (Fallen #2) from Denise Jaden. I was thrilled!
No one really knows what to expect from a sequel, but if the first was good, the second is bound to be just as awesome! And that is exactly what happened.

I had an idea of how Torment was probably going to go, but I was so wrong! Torment exceeded my expectations!

At the end of Fallen, we are left with a scene of Daniel and Cam coming to a truce after they save Luce and take her away from Sword And Cross. The truce was to last 18 days. And it was to keep Luce as safe as possible.
Now we all know Daniel and Cam are not great friends. Well, they aren't friends at all. But they will come together for Luce. So this was pretty big!
We are back with Luce in the second installment. Her love for Daniel still giving her butterflies. And she is still adjusting to the fallen angel life an the ideas of so many past lives she can't remember.
Daniel hides her away in a Californian school named Shoreline. Shoreline isn't any normal school, it houses Nephilim.
Luce gets to learn more about the Fallen Angel life while here. Which includes the Shadows that have haunted her all her life.

I was excited to get to read more about how connected the Shadows were to Luce. They played a major role in this book. And with the Shadows, we get a glimpse of her past lives. But as she glimpses, she feels Daniel is hiding something from her.

I was nervous at the idea of possibly no Luce and Daniel. I mean, I loved them together in Fallen. That is why I was somewhat hesitant to pick up Torment. I just wanted to live in that love bubble a little while longer, before it burst with the disaster waiting to happen.
But I did finally pick up Torment. And was shockingly happy with the love bubble.
Does it pop? I won't go that far and tell you. But there is some stress on it.

Like the new boy in Luce's life. Miles. A Nephilim kid from Shoreline. He has that California boy charm. And Luce notices. He is sweet, friendly, has dimples! I actually caught myself rooting for Miles a couple times. But then I remembered how amazing Daniel was, even if he was being extremely odd.

Luce also makes some new friends. Shelby, an only child with sharing issues. She comes off as mean, but you warm up to her. Jasmine and Dawn, best friends who can talk a mile a minute.
What happened to her friends from Sword And Cross? Just wait and see.

There were some action scenes with the Outcasts. The immortal group that wants to kill Luce. You can bet that Cam is right there in the middle of it all.

The ending was very good. Though you are left with more than one question. Book 3? Please get here fast!

If you loved Fallen, you will enjoy Torment.

My Review

When I first heard about The Tension of Opposites, I didn't know what to expect. But when I started reading it, I was blown away.
Kristina wrote a fabulous story about teen hurt and love. Balancing both awkwardly for a wonderful YA novel!

Tessa is only half living since her best friend was abducted two years ago. Never wanting to do anything because Noelle would never have the chance to do it herself. But then there is a phone call. A glimmer of hope that Noelle is still alive. A glimmer of hope that Tessa can live.
Though, when Noelle comes back, nothing is like what Tessa imagines the reunion being. Noelle is different, scarred.
Now a new boy has stepped into Tessa's life. Max.
Max is kind. Sweet. Hot. And has feelings for Tessa. But now that Noelle is back, Tessa only has room in her life for one.

This story seems real. You can feel what all the characters are feeling. When Tessa is dealing with Noelle, you understand her need to take care of her all the time. Like she is made of glass.

I can only imagine what both Tessa and Noelle are put through and the way Kristina wrote this, helps. Believable story line, believable characters.

The connection between Tessa and Max was wonderful! I loved how they acted with each other and the almost instant gravitational pull toward each other. And the way Max dealt with Tessa being overprotective of Noelle was perfect! I rooted for him all the way!

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a semi dark story of lose, hope, and love.

My Review

If you follow Kieran Scott on Twitter or her blog, you know that she is sweet, fun, and very lively. I knew that had to show in her writing, and it does!

When I learned that I won Kieran's massive book contest, I was thrilled! Finally I would be able to read She's So Dead To Us. I knew it was going to be great!
Was it? Oh, yes! From the very first chapter you are sucked into the lives of the Cresties and the Norms.

Ally Ryan once a Crestie, turned Norm, is back in her old town after her father bankrupt all her old friends families. She doesn't really know what to expect, but she does know nothing is the same. Especially when she visits her old house and a super hot boy is living in her room.

*Enter Jake Graydon* I'm sure you have seen around twitter and Facebook people talking about being JAKESESSED. I know I was a tad bit confused when I first witnessed it. But confused, I am no longer. Jake is hot, to put lightly! He has the jock boy thing going and Ally notices. But she also notices he lives on the Crest.

Told from both Ally and Jake's first person point of views, you get to see both sides of the story. Though sometimes, neither side is right. You get to taste how Ally feels for Jake and Jake for Ally.

I enjoy the concept and the writing. Kieran Scott did a phenomenal job at keeping the reader in the story. At no time did I drift off or think "When is it over?". You are always on the edge of your seat, with your nose buried between the pages.

The ending left you wanting so much more! It is a lot different than how I thought it would end. But no fear, the sequel She's So Over Him comes out next summer. Now for those of us who have read SSDTU, what do you think will happen in book 2? I have my suspicions, but, honestly, I hope they are not true!

If you love YA, you will love She's So Dead To Us. No, it has nothing to do with vampires or murders, don't let the title fool you. Put this at the top of your To Read list!

My Review

The wait is OVER people! We no longer have to stare at our computers, begging Jennifer Echols to release her precious out into the world!
The great part? Forget You is as wonderful as we all imagined.

Jennifer Echols always writes realistic characters and story lines. That is a big reason why I love her books so much. I always think, "Wow, I can see myself being friends with these characters".
Forget You is no exception!
You easily slip into Zoey's life and follow her as she tries to keep her world in balance. But this is YA literature, people. That balancing job is not going to be easy.
First, her dad knocks up a younger woman and divorces her mom. Three months later, her mom has a mental breakdown and downs a bottle of sleeping pills. Then, Zoey has a car crash, but can't remember anything that happened hours before, during, or right after.
Now, her "boyfriend" Brandon is acting weird, Doug is acting like her actually likes her, and there is still a big void in her mind from when the crash happened.

I want to talk about her "boyfriend", Brandon. Every time she brought up that she had a boyfriend, I wanted to shake her and say "Wake up and smell the break up!" Even though they weren't technically together (you will see what I mean). Brandon is, easily put, a man ho.
We all know one or of one, so you have an idea of what I mean. And after the wreck, he pulls away more and more from Zoey, to the extent were he is pretty much non existent until she brings him up again to Doug.

Okay, next boy. Doug. Oh, Doug. How I love thee. You make my heart soar and my knees weak. *happy sigh*
I'll stop swooning on this post now...

The concept of Forget You is great. I don't see how this book hasn't already been published by someone else. But I'm glad it wasn't. It just screams Jennifer Echols wrote me!

The cover is very pretty. I love Zoey and Doug, and the cover fits them perfectly. It's very Jennifer Echols.

Everyone should pick up Forget You and all of Jennifer's other novels!

My Review

I was extremely excited when I heard I would get a chance to read / review I Am Number Four. SciFi hasn't had a book lately that I was absolutely in love with. This changed after I read IANF.
The voice of John, A.K.A. Four, is real. You get so caught up in his life, that you can catch yourself thinking it's real. Well, as real as you can get with aliens roaming around.

You may be thinking that this is just a guy's book. It definitely is not. Yes, there are aliens, yes there is some fighting, but there is also an underlying romance. Which, if I may add, is probably in the top 10 romances in a novel ever.

The concept is great. Who doesn't enjoy the idea of a whole other planet (Lorien), way beyond our years. Where people have powers and can throw others into a different country with the flick of a wrist. I know I have thought about it! But due to unfortunate circumstances, Lorien is being destroyed by Mogadorians. Everyone on Lorien has been killed except nine children and their guardians. They went into hiding on Earth with the hopes of growing and developing their Legacies, so one day they can avenge Lorien. But now, the Mogadorians are on Earth, trying to kill all 9 of the gifted children.
One, Two, and Three have been killed. Four is next, but him and his guardian, Henri, are not going down without a fight.

I wish I knew these characters in real life. John (Four) reminds you of any teenage boy who falls for a girl. At least until he trains for his legacies... Henri is like the dad or uncle you wish to have. Always there no matter what.
John makes a friend, Sam. He is a geek who loves aliens. John also gets a girl, Sarah. She is sweet, super friendly, and everyone loves her.

I Am Number Four is being filmed. In my opinion the actors fit perfectly. I mean, I wont say no to Alex Pettyfer!!! Dianna Agron is also part of the adaptation as Sarah, which is perfect! As I read IANF, I did picture everyone as who they are on screen.
It is due to hit the big screen February 18, 2011. But we all know that can change at any moment!

Now I can go on and on about this book, but I'll leave it here. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone!

Today is 17 days to my 17th birthday (August 9th)! I, personally, thought that was pretty cool.
I know some people say, "Big deal. Seventeen is not a special birthday." But, to me, it is. Why? Because the day after, I will be able to get my driver's license. (I waited until I was 16 to get my permit. Long story. I'll share some other day.)

My Review

My first instinct after reading the synopsis was, I HAVE TO READ THIS! Obviously my instincts are never wrong because I loved it.
From the beginning you are sucked into Aura's mind. As she talks about her love for Logan, you feel that love, too. When she is listening to the Keeley Brothers play, you sway to the beat she hears.
Jeri Smith-Ready wrote beautifully. You're always there and not drifting off because you can't get into the story.
I love the idea of Shade. Everyone after the Shift (post-shifters) can see ghosts and communicate with then. Very different from most novels. Ghosts always intrigue me. I always try to find haunted areas to catch a glimpse of them (and was lucky a few times!!). So I already had a draw to the story.

The characters hold their own. Each and everyone of them. Aura, Logan, her Aunt, her best friend, and Zachary.
Okay I'll skip everyone except Logan and Zach.
From the moment Logan appeared on the pages I was hooked. "Be still my beating heart" is how I would describe the way I felt. Swoon! I would have happily traded lives with Aura! But then tragedy strikes. And enter Zach.
Again. BE STILL MY BEATING HEART! And he has a Scottish accent. Accents give a guy at least 10 points of hotness in my mind.
But he was also very sweet and took care of Aura.

Three fourths of the way in, you are really thrown for some loops. Especially at the end. And the way the over lapped was perfect. You went right from one scene into another.
Also, throughout the book, music plays a BIG role! If you don't know much about indie/punk type music, you will get an awesome crash course! Trust me, you will want to take notes. :)

The cover is beautiful, too. I love the girl and the colors and the lettering. All great!

Overall, I recommend all my YA loving friends to read Shade!

OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH.
OH. MY. GOSH.
Okay. Breathe, Courtney.

Simone Elkeles has done it ONCE AGAIN! I read Leaving Paradise after Perfect Chemistry some months back. I remember thinking how much I enjoyed Simone's writing style.
It was very different from other stories I have read. And for that, I was grateful.
None of that long, drawn out descriptions. Simone kept the story going with real language anyone can relate to.
Return To Paradise didn't change my opinion. Actually, it made it better, if that is even possible.
When you start RTP, you jump right back into Caleb Becker and Maggie Armstrong's worlds.

Caleb hasn't been back to Paradise for 8 months. Hasn't talked to family, friends, not even Maggie.
Maggie has been trying to hold herself together these past 8 months without Caleb. She always had hope he would come back. But he never did.
Now, due to unfortunate circumstances, they are back in the same town. In the same van, even.
From the moment they lay eyes on each other, you are holding your breath and yelling at the pages "KISS ALREADY!".
The tension between Caleb and Maggie is thick and I love it! They are perfect together, especially when they fight!
The back story on all the characters are amazing. Some of the minor characters will really get to you in a very good way.

My head is going a million mph. And I know if I keep rambling, I will spill about the entire book. So, I'll leave my review to: I absolutely loved it!

Now, onto the cover. I'm not too excited about it. This is just the ARC cover, so it can change between now and publication date. And, honestly, I hope it does.
The Return To Paradise ARC cover doesn't grab my attention like Simone Elkeles' other novels did.

But other than my dislike for the cover, Return To Paradise is a must read.

Waiting on Wednesday is typically about books to be published, I know. But I found a very interesting novel that I am waiting on that is already out!

The Power of The Internet And Get To Know ME.

We all know how much the internet impacts our lives. Some use it for work, and for some it is work. Others use it for fun or to keep in touch with family.
I personally use it to
A) Keep up with family (My cousin, Wesley, and I talk all the time on here. He has his own blog: And Please Enjoy The Show, which you should check out.)
B) Keep up with the book scene.
If you asked me 2 years ago if I would have a blog of my own, I would have laughed in your face. Never did I think I would do this. Never did I think I would have a Twitter account, either.
Look at me now. I tweet everyday and post on a regular basis.

Y'all know my love for reading and writing is unbelievable. Yours probably is, too, if you follow this blog.And because of that love, I have made some of the best friends in the world and met some of the most wonderful people ever!
Without knowing them, I would probably be stuck in my reading/writing and would never step up like I should.

My name is Courtney Rae. I am a soon to be 17 year old homeschooled senior. I reside in North Carolina and love it. My puppy's name is Jace. He is a lab/husky mix. Yes, he is named after Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments character. I nicknamed him Demon Dog.
My favorite color is green. People come to the conclusion that that means I like money. Yeah, I do, but I like green because it was my brothers first favorite color.
I have an older brother, Landon. He is 19 and one of the best people I know. Without him, I probably would have been certifiably insane a long time ago.
My BEST friends are Alex and Makayla. I met Makayla in 6th grade and Alex in 8th. They are both YANKEES! Alex loves pink. Makayla loves Spongebob. Because of them, I am now certifiably insane.

If I had to choose between jeans or a dress. I will always pick jeans.
My hair color is blonde. That doesn't mean I'm ditzy. But I admit I have my moments. I have dyed my hair multiple times. Last Christmas it was BRIGHT red. I loved it. My grandparents... not so much.
My nickname is Bigbutt. I got it from my grandfather. I call him Bigmouth.
I read all the time. If you ask me what I'm doing, the conversation will go like this:

"Again? Well, that was a stupid question for me to ask."
My dad says I'm a nerd, but not in a bad way. He is proud of me and what I have accomplished. He wants me to become a published author. I want that, too.
My mom says she is proud of me, also. I look just like her. I wish I was more like her on the inside, though. She is a strong woman who, when she knows what she wants, she goes after anything.
My parents are shaping me to be the best human being I can be.

My Review

I was very excited to learn I would be reading and reviewing Siren. Many great things have been said about this Tricia Rayburn novel and I wanted to see for myself.
I was hooked from the first chapter.

There are not many mermaid/sea creature reads out there. So, Siren was a cool drink of (salt) water to what has been floating around YA. For those of you who want to read something different that also holds your favorite reading elements (love, lose, etc), you need to pick up Siren.

From chapter 1, you are already caught in the plot current and swept away. This won so many happy points with me. Some books have really slow beginnings, where the author is trying to mold the story for you. But Tricia Rayburn didn’t waste time. She did a fantastic job at keeping the characters and storyline afloat and the reader awake.

I love the idea of Siren. Teen girl looses her sister in a terrible cliff diving accident. Things don’t feel right with the protag , so she goes snooping. Only to find out that others have been killed in water-related deaths recently. Along the way of uncovering secrets, she finds love and some heartbreak.
Sounds fun, but also mysterious.

Something I was thrilled about was the characters and character development. Tricia wrote some great characters. Everyone had their own voice. Every time someone spoke, you knew exactly who it was. My favorite was Betty. I enjoyed her story the most out of anyone. She has such an intriguing history. You will know what I am talking about when you read Siren. You can’t miss her and her mysterious ways.
The character development also hit a home run. It didn’t take the entire book to learn about the characters. You quickly knew who they were.

Now the only thing that irked me was the ending. I don’t know if it was just me, because I was wanting something different that what I got. Or if it is because I know the ending is perfect for the story.
Either way, this is a great read. Sequel anytime soon? *crosses fingers*

Update: Tricia Rayburn wrote me on twitter saying the sequel will be out next summer!

Blogs Need Face Lifts Too!

I know I haven't been posting as much as I should. There is a reason!
Courtney Reads needed some work done and until I was happy about it, I wasn't posting. I mean, why would I post on something even I couldn't stand looking at?
So, I slaved over my computer for days, trying and failing miserably to fix whatever I can.
I'm not good with computers. And my knowledge of HTML goes as far as any teen who used to have a Myspace would. It helps me get by, but doesn't produce a pretty blog.
I hope that now you can stand the sight of Courtney Reads. And if anyone has a problem with it, let me know ASAP! My baby can't go around looking bad, now can it?
